Joseph William "Bill" May
Bill was an exceptional, intelligent, one-of-a-kind guy. He became a part of the Sealock family when he married Mary & Herb's only daughter in 1954. Though he and Betty never lived in Oklahoma, all the family knew Bill!
He was a native of California and met Betty while attending Citrus Community College. He was active in sports--playing both football and baseball at Citrus. Later he attended the University of Colorado on a baseball scholarship. His lifelong passion for sports never ended. He was a dedicated fan, not only to his former teams, but for any sporting event he ever attended. It was not unusual for him to call an Oklahoma relative and ask, "How did the Wolves (or Savages, Chieftains, Red Devils) do Friday night?" And he expected us to know!
Bill served in Naval Intelligence during the Korean War. After his discharge he earned his doctorate at USC. He became a lifelong fan of the USC Trojans. After working in administration for the State Department of Education in Sacramento, he was named an associate superintendent for the State of California schools; the youngest person to hold that position.
At his memorial service one of his former collegues told of going to different parts of the State to check on various aspects of their work. Regardless of the size of school, the distance they traveled, or never having been there before, Bill would be able to tell him in which sports that particular school excelled, along with the name of the school mascot. Not only that, but he named others all along the way!
He and Betty had traveled all over the world. Though he was not particularly fluent in foreign languages, he would learn enough words for most countries so he could "bargain" relentlessly for trinkets Betty wished to purchase. One of his choice stories was pertaining to his haggling with a local merchant of another country over a $4 item. It became a legendary tale.
It was expected that Bill would strike up a conversation with everyone. Any young waiter/waitress would be asked, "Where do you go to school? Which college do you plan to attend? What will your major be?" Then he placed his order! It is not surprising that Betty and Bill established the May Family Foundation; awarding scholarships to many young people in California, Colorado, and Oklahoma.
Bill was of the Baptist faith where his interest in young people continued with his encouragement and support.
