Flora Annah Allison

Almost nothing is recorded about the early life of "Annah." We know she was married in Kansas, but as to how she met Dan we have no information. He was ten years older, and clearly the head of the family. We are told that Grandma Annah always sang as she worked. Her children learned many folk songs and hymns as they listened.

She managed to live frugally, yet always had something to feed anyone who visited her home. Seemingly, she didn't require much materially, and we are told that they once lived in a "soddy" after coming to Oklahoma. She told of giving food to Indians as they passed by.

She allowed herself one luxury a while after Grandpa Dan's death. She purchased a Lane cedar chest which she paid for by installments from her meager Old Age Pension check.

She, too, shared many life experiences with her children and grandchildren, though she always appeared to live in the shadow of Grandpa Dan's wit and humor. Her special chuckle lives on in our memories.

A good hug from Grandma was a wonderful treat. Later, we have guessed that she always felt so soft and cuddly because she wore so many undergarments; a custom of the late 1800's which she never abandoned. Her dresses were always made from a modest print, buttoned at the neck, with a brooch at the neckline.

After Dan's death, she made many trips from Oklahoma to California visiting the daughters who were there. Her black hat, adorned by a big rose, was always worn without regard for wind and dust in those days of no air-conditioning!
